Jack Petchey Award Scheme

We have continued to be part of the Jack Petchey Award scheme throughout this year and this had meant another  Achievement Award for one of our volunteers.

This time, Darren Gorewal was the unanimous choice and a well-deserved nominee as he has been a dedicated Ursuline Links volunteer since 2012. This year he volunteered on the London Social Justice for Young Adults project in July and then helped as a Youth Leader on the London Social Justice, Thanet Day Camp and New Orleans projects.

He has made an outstanding contribution to Ursuline links this year and he is an excellent role model for our younger volunteers.

Thanet Day Camp Christmas Party

On Friday 2nd December, the children from the Thanet Day Camp project returned to Ursuline College to enjoy a Christmas get-together.

The children came from six local primary schools and they were delighted to be reunited with their group leaders, the Ursuline Links volunteers and youth leaders who had worked with them during the summer. We also had the benefit of lots of new Ursuline Links volunteers from the College 6th Form and they enjoyed getting to know the children and entering into the fun.

A great time was had by all, with lots of food, Christmas songs, games such as pass the Parcel and musical chairs and the group balloon challenge. The children enjoyed the arts and crafts table and went home with some lovely decorations for their Christmas trees. The highlight of the afternoon was a special visit by Father Christmas, who presented each child with a little gift.

Thanet Day Camp

From the 15-18th August we ran the Thanet Day Camp project. This was a new location this year and we were delighted to be able to hold this project at Ursuline College, Westgate. The Headteachers of six local primary schools nominated the 26 children who participated in this project and what a happy, busy week we had!

Activities included dance, drama, arts & crafts, tie-dye, card craft, science, archery, climbing, orienteering and baking. As with the London Day Camp project, the highlight of the week was the day trip – and for this project we went to Port Lympne Animal Wildlife Park. Here the children thoroughly enjoyed the safari trip, seeing animals such as giraffes, rhino, antelope, meerkats and gorillas.

We were very grateful for the support from adult volunteers who led several of the workshops, our Youth Leader volunteers, our four student volunteers and the financial support from the Ursuline Community, the Ursuline schools, the local parish and several local businesses.
